Grammy

Short for 'grandmother' or a Grammy Award, the highest award for recorded music in the United States.

As a grandmother term: from 'grandma' reduced to 'gram' or 'granny', with regional variation 'grammy'. As the music award: founded in 1959, 'Grammy' was created from 'gramophone' (the early record player), combining it with 'Emmy' (TV awards). The award's name literally references the technology that made recorded music possible.
