Grapevine

A climbing vine that produces grapes; an informal network through which information and gossip spreads rapidly.

From 'grape' plus 'vine', first recorded in the 1730s for the plant. The figurative sense of informal communication networks emerged during the American Civil War, when telegraph wires strung hastily between trees resembled wild grapevines.
