A tiny crustacean about the size of a grain of rice that lives in seawater and eats wood, causing damage to wooden ships and docks.
Origin uncertain, but possibly from an older dialect word related to 'grib' meaning to eat or gnaw. The creature was well-known to sailors and shipbuilders by the 1600s.
