Ground

Ground is the solid surface of the earth that you stand or walk on. It can also mean a basis or reason for something, like the grounds for a decision.

From Old English “grund,” meaning “bottom, foundation, surface of the earth,” related to German “Grund.” It originally referred to the bottom of the sea as well as dry land.
