Gusset

/ˈɡʌsɪt/ noun

A triangular or diamond-shaped piece of fabric inserted into a seam to provide extra room for movement or to reinforce areas of stress. Gussets are commonly found in underarms, crotch areas, and sleeve attachments.

From Old French 'gousset' meaning a small pouch or piece of mail armor. The term transferred to clothing construction because gussets served a similar function of providing flexibility and protection in areas of movement.
