Hob

The flat heating surface of a stove or cooktop where pots and pans are placed for cooking. Can also refer to a hobgoblin or mischievous sprite in folklore.

From Middle English 'hobbe,' originally a nickname for Robert, later applied to hobgoblins and household spirits. The cooking surface meaning evolved from the idea of a 'hob' being the hearth area where cooking occurred.
