A place where people pay to stay overnight in rooms, usually with services like cleaning and sometimes food.

From French “hôtel,” originally meaning a large town house or public building, from Old French “hostel,” from Latin “hospitale” (guest house). The modern meaning of a paid lodging place developed later.
