Hyponatremia

/ˌhaɪpoʊnəˈtrimiə/ noun

Abnormally low levels of sodium in the blood, typically below 135 mEq/L. Can cause confusion, headache, muscle cramps, and in severe cases, brain swelling and seizures.

From Greek 'hypo' (under/below), Latin 'natrium' (sodium), and Greek 'haima' (blood). This condition gained recognition in the mid-20th century as intravenous fluid therapy became common and doctors realized that too much water could be dangerous.
