The hypotenuse is the longest side of a right triangle, opposite the right angle. It is the side used in the famous Pythagorean theorem, a² + b² = c².

From Latin "hypotenusa," from Greek "hypoteinousa" meaning "the side stretching under." It literally described the side that "stretches under" the right angle in a triangle diagram.
