Bringing goods or products into a country from another country for sale, or bringing in something important like an idea or technology.

From Latin 'importare' (in- 'in' + portare 'to carry'). Originally meant physically carrying goods into a place; the meaning extended to any kind of introduction of foreign materials or ideas.
