Liminal

Occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold; relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.

From Latin 'limen' (threshold). Anthropologist Arnold van Gennep used it for ritual states between one identity and another. The doorway itself — not inside, not outside.
