A lot can mean a large amount of something, or a specific piece of land. It can also mean a person’s fate or situation in life.

From Old English 'hlot,' meaning 'object used to determine someone's share by casting lots.' Originally it was about dividing things by chance, which later extended to land portions and then to general quantity and fate.
