Pump

A mechanical device using suction or pressure to raise or move liquids, compress gases, or inflate objects. Also a type of woman's shoe without laces or buckles.

Probably from Middle Dutch pompe meaning "water conduit, pipe." The exact origin is uncertain but may be imitative of the sound of pumping. Entered English in the 15th century.
