Quarry

/ˈkwɒri/ noun

A place where stone, sand, or other materials are dug out of the ground; or an animal being hunted.

From Old French 'quarriere' (stone pit), derived from Latin 'quadrus' (square stone). The meaning 'hunted prey' came later through association with court hunting, where quarried game was the target.
