To react means to respond to something that happens, often quickly or based on how you feel. In science, it also means for substances to act on each other and change chemically.

It comes from Latin “re-” meaning “back” or “again,” and “agere,” meaning “to do or act,” through the Latin “reagere,” “to react.” The scientific use grew in the 18th and 19th centuries with chemistry.
