An organized attempt to resist or overthrow a government, ruler, or authority. It can also mean strong, open resistance to any kind of control.

From Old French *rebellion*, from Latin *rebellio* meaning ‘renewal of war’, from *re-* (again) + *bellum* (war). It originally described going back into a state of war after peace.
