Recessive

In genetics, a recessive trait is one that is hidden when a dominant gene is present and only appears when a person has two copies of the recessive gene.

From *recess* (withdrawal, going back) + *-ive* (having the nature of). It reflects the idea of a trait that ‘recedes’ or steps back when paired with a stronger one.
