Repercussion

An unintended and usually negative effect that follows an action or event.

From Latin *repercussio* “a striking back,” from *repercutere* “to strike back,” from *re-* “back” and *percutere* “to strike through.” It began as a physical echo or rebound and became a metaphor for consequences.
