Request

To request is to politely ask for something. A request is the act of asking, often formally or in writing.

From Old French *requeste* meaning 'a petition or demand', from Latin *requaerere* 'to seek again, ask'. The word has long been used in legal and court settings, which is why it still sounds more formal than 'ask'.
