Restrain

To restrain is to hold back or limit someone or something from moving or acting freely. It can refer to physical control or to controlling emotions and actions.

From Latin *restringere* 'to bind back, hold tight', via Old French *restreindre*. The image of tying or holding back remains central in modern use.
