To withdraw or take back a statement, claim, or assertion, typically because it was incorrect or inappropriate. Can also mean to physically pull back or withdraw something.

From Latin 'retrahere,' meaning 'to draw back,' composed of 're-' (back) and 'trahere' (to draw, pull). The physical sense of pulling back preceded the metaphorical sense of withdrawing statements.
