Relating to earthquakes or vibrations in the earth. It can also describe something so big or important that it feels like it shakes everything up.

From French 'sismique', from Greek 'seismos' meaning 'earthquake' and 'seiein' meaning 'to shake'. The word was adopted into English in the mid-19th century as scientists began formally studying earthquakes.
