To choose something or someone from a group, usually because it is the best or most suitable. It can also be used as an adjective to describe something specially chosen or of high quality.

From Latin 'selectus', the past participle of 'seligere' meaning 'to pick out', from 'se-' (apart) + 'legere' (to gather, choose). The idea is literally “to pick out from the rest.”
