Semester

/səˈmes.tər/ noun

One of two main periods of study in a school or college year, usually lasting about half the year. Many schools divide the academic year into semesters instead of shorter terms.

From German 'Semester', from Latin 'semestris' meaning 'lasting six months', from 'sex' (six) + 'mensis' (month). The word came into English through university systems in Europe.
