Shroud

A long cloth that wraps around a dead body for burial, or anything that covers or hides something else.

From Old English 'scrud' meaning clothing or covering; the word's literal meaning (burial cloth) became the primary sense, with the metaphorical meaning (anything that hides) developing later.
