Spend

To spend is to use money to buy things or pay for services. It can also mean to use up time or energy doing something.

From Old English *spendan* “to spend, use up,” from Medieval Latin *spendere* “to weigh out, distribute,” influenced by Latin *expendere* “to weigh out, pay.” It originally suggested measuring out resources.
