The layer of the Earth’s atmosphere above the troposphere, where airplanes sometimes fly and the ozone layer is found.

From Latin “stratus,” meaning spread out or layered, and “sphere,” meaning ball. It was named for its layered, stable air above the more turbulent lower atmosphere.
