Territory

/ˈtɛrəˌtɔːri/ noun

Territory is an area of land that belongs to or is controlled by a person, group, or country. Animals also have territories, which are spaces they defend as their own.

From Latin *territorium* 'land around a town, domain, district', possibly from *terra* 'land' and a root related to *terrere* 'to frighten', as in land defended by scaring others away. Over time it came to mean any controlled area.
