The capital city of Japan, one of the largest and most populated cities in the world. It is a major center for business, technology, culture, and transportation.
From Japanese 'Tōkyō' (東京), meaning 'Eastern Capital' from 'tō' (east) and 'kyō' (capital). The city was known as Edo until 1868, when the emperor moved there and it was renamed. The new name mirrored 'Kyōto' (京都), the 'Capital City' to the west.
