Abbreviator

/əˈbriːv.i.eɪ.tər/ noun

Definition

A person who shortens words or texts, or a tool or device that makes abbreviations.

Etymology

From 'abbreviate' + '-or' (Latin agent suffix meaning 'one who'). Medieval scribes were sometimes called abbreviators because shorthand-writing was a valuable skill.

Kelly Says

In the Middle Ages, 'abbreviators' were actually prestigious scribes in the papal court who created official shortened versions of documents—abbreviating was a high skill, not just lazy texting.
