Abetment

/əˈbɛtmənt/ noun

Definition

The act of helping, encouraging, or supporting someone to do something wrong or illegal.

Etymology

From Old French abeter (to incite, bait), from a- (to) + beter (to bait or set a dog on), of Germanic origin. The -ment suffix creates a noun from the verb abet.

Kelly Says

If your friend dares you to break a rule and you do it, your friend is guilty of abetment—this is why the law punishes not just the person who commits a crime, but also anyone who knowingly helps them do it!
