Definition
Having the quality of cleansing or washing away; used as a cleanser or detergent.
Etymology
From Latin 'abluens' (washing away), present participle of 'abluere.' Used in medical and chemical contexts from the 17th century to describe substances that cleanse or remove impurities.
Kelly Says
Early chemists and doctors used 'abluent' to describe anything that cleaned—it's the ancestor of 'ablutionary' and relates to the whole 'ab-' (away) + 'lue' (wash) family. Medieval apothecaries had entire categories for washing remedies!
