Definition
A type of sluice gate or water control structure used in Louisiana bayous and swamps to manage water flow between bodies of water.
Etymology
From Louisiana French aboideaux, derived from French aboiteau, which comes from Old French a boite (with a box), referring to the boxlike structure of the gate mechanism.
Kelly Says
This wonderfully specific word reveals how English borrowed directly from Cajun French communities in Louisiana—it's one of the few English words with a 'dz' sound at the end, showing the French influence on American English in that region.
