Accourage

/əˈkɜːrɪdʒ/ verb

Definition

An extremely archaic term meaning to encourage or give courage to; to hearten.

Etymology

From Old French acourager, composed of a- (to) + corage (courage). This Middle English verb became obsolete as 'encourage' (from en- + courage) became the standard English form.

Kelly Says

English had both 'accourage' and 'encourage' competing in the 1300s-1500s, but 'encourage' won out—likely because its en- prefix felt more naturally English than the French a- prefix.
