Accusations

/ˌækjuˈzeɪʃənz/ noun

Definition

Claims or assertions that someone has done something wrong or illegal. Formal or informal charges of wrongdoing made against a person.

Etymology

From Latin 'accusatio' from 'accusare' meaning 'to call to account'. Composed of 'ad-' (to) and 'causa' (cause, lawsuit). The word evolved from legal terminology to general usage for any claim of wrongdoing.

Kelly Says

Accusations reveal the fragile nature of reputation and trust in human society. Interestingly, the burden of proof often shifts depending on context - in law, accusations must be proven, but in social situations, they can damage relationships simply by being voiced.
