Acetocinnamene

/ˌæsɪtoʊsɪˈnæmən/ noun

Definition

A chemical compound made by combining acetyl groups with cinnamene (a compound derived from cinnamon), used in organic chemistry.

Etymology

From aceto- (acetic acid) + cinnamene (from cinnamon). Cinnamene, also called styrene, is a hydrocarbon found in cinnamon that became important in polymer chemistry.

Kelly Says

Styrene (another name for cinnamene) is the building block for polystyrene plastic and Styrofoam—so when chemists modify it with acetyl groups like in acetocinnamene, they're experimenting with the very molecules that became ubiquitous modern materials.
