Acheron

/ˈækəˌrɑn/ noun

Definition

In Greek mythology, one of the five rivers of the underworld, across which Charon ferried the souls of the dead; also refers to any dark, gloomy, or infernal place.

Etymology

From Greek Acheron, the name of an actual river in northwestern Greece (now called Acheronas). Mythologically, it represents the boundary between the world of the living and the dead.

Kelly Says

The Acheron River still exists in Greece today, and it's genuinely spooky—it actually disappears underground through a cave system called the 'Nekromanteion' (Oracle of the Dead), which may have inspired the mythological underworld.
