Definition
The quality or property of being colorless; in optics, the correction of chromatic aberration; in perception, the inability to distinguish colors.
Etymology
From 'achromat-' (colorless) + '-ism' (noun suffix). Developed in 18th-19th century scientific language to describe both optical phenomena and biological color conditions.
Kelly Says
Achromatism in optics and achromatism in color-blindness are named after the same Greek concept—two completely different conditions that both involve something going 'missing' with color!
