Acracy

/ˈækrəsi/ noun

Definition

A lack of self-control or the inability to act according to one's own will; weakness of will.

Etymology

From Greek a- (without) combined with kratos (power, strength, rule). The term describes a philosophical condition where someone knows what they should do but cannot make themselves do it.

Kelly Says

Acracy is what Socrates called akrasia—doing the wrong thing even when you know better—and it's been a puzzle for philosophers for 2,400 years: how can a rational being act against their own reason and interest?
