Acute

/əˈkjuːt/ adjective

Definition

Acute can mean very serious or intense, especially for problems or illnesses that come on quickly. It can also describe sharp senses or sharp angles less than 90 degrees.

Etymology

From Latin 'acutus', meaning 'sharp, pointed', from 'acuere' (to sharpen). The idea of 'sharpness' spread to pain, intelligence, and geometry.

Kelly Says

Acute is all about sharpness—sharp pain, sharp thinking, sharp angles. That’s why an 'acute' illness hits hard and fast, and an 'acute' observer notices the tiny details others miss.
