Definition
Plural of adespotum; ancient Greek or Latin literary works of uncertain authorship or unknown origin.
Etymology
From Greek 'adesotos,' meaning 'without a master' or 'unclaimed.' The term was used by ancient scholars to catalogue literary fragments whose authors could not be identified.
Kelly Says
Ancient scholars used 'adespota' (meaning 'no master') to label mystery texts found in libraries, and we still use this word today when we talk about 'pseudepigrapha' and anonymous ancient writings.
