Administratrix

/ˌædmɪnɪˈstreɪtrɪks/ noun

Definition

A woman who is appointed to manage and settle the affairs of someone's estate, especially after their death.

Etymology

From Latin administratrix, feminine of administrator. Still used in legal documents and probate law to distinguish from administrator (male).

Kelly Says

In legal history, 'administratrix' had very different powers depending on whether she was married—a widow could serve as administratrix, but a married woman couldn't act independently in most legal systems!
