Definition
A building material made from sun-dried clay bricks, often mixed with straw. It is also used to refer to houses or structures built with these bricks.
Etymology
From Spanish *adobe*, which came from Arabic *aṭ-ṭūb* meaning “the brick.” Ultimately, it goes back to a Coptic and then ancient Egyptian word for “brick.”
Kelly Says
Adobe is one of the oldest building technologies humans still use today, especially in hot, dry places. The same basic mud-and-straw trick that worked for ancient Egyptians still keeps homes cool in modern deserts.
