Definition
Describing plant organs that develop in unusual or unexpected locations, such as roots growing from stems or leaves, or buds forming on roots. These structures arise from tissues that don't normally produce such organs.
Etymology
From Latin 'adventicius' meaning 'coming from outside' or 'foreign,' derived from 'advenire' (to arrive). The botanical use developed in the 18th century to describe organs appearing where they typically wouldn't be found.
Kelly Says
Adventitious growth is like plant superpowers - imagine if humans could grow new arms from their backs when needed! Many plants we propagate from cuttings rely on this ability to sprout roots from stems, making plant reproduction wonderfully flexible.
