Etymology
From Greek aei (always) plus pathos (suffering/disease). This medical term literally means 'eternal suffering' and was used to describe chronic conditions that persistently afflict the same person.

In ancient and medieval medicine, doctors distinguished between acute (sudden) illnesses and aeipathies—those stubborn, recurring afflictions that seemed to haunt you forever. If you kept getting the same sickness over and over, that was your aeipathy.
