Definition
Burning or on fire, or excited and energized about something.
Etymology
From Old English 'a-' (on) + 'fire'. A compound preposition that became common in Middle English for describing things engulfed in flames or passion.
Kelly Says
The literal meaning 'burning' came first, but 'afire with passion' took off in Romantic poetry in the 1800s—poets loved using fire metaphors for emotions, and this word became their favorite shorthand!
