Africa

/ˈæfrɪkə/ proper noun

Definition

The second-largest continent on Earth, located south of Europe and bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It includes over 50 countries with many languages, cultures, and environments.

Etymology

From Latin *Africa*, originally used by the Romans for parts of North Africa around Carthage. The deeper origin is debated, possibly from a local tribe name or a word meaning “sunny” or “dusty.”

Kelly Says

Africa is not a country but a vast continent with over a billion people and thousands of languages. Many ideas, from mathematics to music styles, have roots in African cultures that the rest of the world often overlooks.
