Agglomeration

/əˌɡlɑməˈreɪʃən/ noun

Definition

A large urban area formed by the merging or close clustering of several towns, cities, or metropolitan areas. This creates a continuous built-up region where individual settlements lose their distinct boundaries.

Etymology

From Latin 'agglomerare' (to wind into a ball), originally a geological term for rock fragments cemented together. Urban planners adopted it in the early 20th century to describe how separate settlements cluster and merge into larger urban masses.

Kelly Says

Tokyo's agglomeration is so vast it houses 38 million people – more than the entire population of Canada! This mega-agglomeration stretches across multiple prefectures and includes dozens of formerly separate cities now merged into one continuous urban fabric.
