Aggregates

/ˈæɡrɪɡəts/ noun

Definition

Materials like sand, gravel, or crushed stone used in construction, or collections of items gathered together to form a total.

Etymology

From Latin 'aggregare' meaning to add to a flock, from 'ad-' (to) and 'grex' (flock). Originally referred to gathering things together, later specialized in construction and statistics for combined materials or data.

Kelly Says

Concrete is actually just a binding agent holding aggregates together—without gravel and sand, cement alone would be too expensive and brittle to build with. Ancient Romans used volcanic ash as aggregate, creating concrete so durable that their structures still stand today.
