Agitation

/ˌædʒɪˈteɪʃən/ noun

Definition

Agitation is a state of nervous excitement, worry, or emotional upset, or the act of stirring up a liquid or a group of people. It can describe both inner restlessness and outward political or social protest.

Etymology

From Latin *agitare* meaning “to set in motion, drive, stir up,” through French *agitation*. Over time, the idea of physically shaking something expanded to include stirring up emotions or public opinion.

Kelly Says

Think of a washing machine: it agitates clothes by constantly moving them around. The same image works for your mind or a crowd—agitation is mental or social ‘shaking’ that doesn’t let things settle.
